MoonJuice & Adaptogens

In an effort to start my self-care steps for the new year early, I was eager to start skincare from the inside. I turned 30 this year and while earthly ways of measuring your life through how many days you have been alive seems silly, it somehow gets to you. So, “welcome to wrinkles and goodbye acne!” I was wrong. I got both. Apart from drinking gallons of water a day, I was looking for more nutrition to support healthy skin and I thought I tried it all, until I realized most of my cystic acne and breakouts were from stress. How do you manage stress internally? Is there more than just exercise, clean eating, and hydration?

Yes.

I found MoonJuice, which uses adaptogens to reduce the effects of stress on the mind and body. By helping to normalize cortisol levels, adaptogens helps reduce stress, while enhancing energy, mood, focus & overall beauty. MoonJuice says, “Superherbs and Supermushrooms that help expand your body's capacity to handle mental, physical and emotional stress.”

   My skeptical husband wanted to see the double blind, placebo, peer reviewed, tested on the moon clinical studies. So, I went to work and was pleasantly surprised.

First, there is so little ingredients that it was easy for me to do the research.

Shatavari root extract, Ashwagandha root and leaf extract°, Amla fruit extract°, Rhodiola root extract, Rice flour, capsule (hypromellose), rice hulls°, medium chain triglycerides, rice bran extract°, gum arabic°, and sunflower oil°- All grown globally and then extracted with spring water in a wind powered facility in the Pacific Northwest.

What is What? Easy, if you are already like so many that use coffee as a stimulant in the morning, chamomile in the evening, and eucalyptus to clear nasal passages, you use herbs to help your body get it done. Adaptogens are no different, and there are studies that prove they are even better than we know.

Shatavari: Apart from many other studies that proved Shatavari aided in reducing symptoms of menopause and increasing female productive help and PCOS, the 2014 study published in Cellular and Molecular Neurobiology that shatavari reduced anxiety in rats by interacting with the serotonin and gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) systems, which are involved in anxiety, both in rats and humans was particularly exciting. A bit of yoga in an herb!

Ashwagandha: Being the most commonly used and extensively studied adaptogen , antioxidant, anticancer, anxiolytic, antidepressant, cardio protective, thyroid modulating, immunomodulation, antibacterial, anti fungal, anti-inflammatory, neuroprotective, cognitive enhancing and hematopoietic agent, the studies are endless. However, the the easiest to understand is the reduction of cortisol levels and reduction on the DASS (Depretion, Anxiety, and Stress) scale.

Rhodiola: (golden root" or "Arctic root) Is used in arctic mountainous regions  for stimulating the nervous system, decreasing depression, enhancing work performance, eliminating fatigue, and preventing high altitude sickness. Apart from the clinical studies, the use for staying positive during long winter months, speaks to me!

Amla: Clinical studies prove to prevent cardiovascular disease by retarding the accelerated atherosclerosis in hyperlipidemic individuals

Experience:

I took the recommended dose (2 capsules) at the same time per day every day, and after approx 1 week, I started to feel a softness to my skin tone and less breakouts. Here’s why i think that is. Not that these adaptogens immediately cleared my skin within 6 days, but I was not touching my face as much (an observation of thy husband) and therefore not introducing more bactria and oils and therefore reducing breakouts. Why wasn’t I touching my face as much? Maybe i was less anxious and stressed due to those 4 beauties above.
